One Dead in Indiana Plant Explosion

Jupiterimages/Thinkstock(UNION MILLS, Ind.) -- An explosion at an Indiana fertilizer plant southeast of Chicago has left at least one person dead.

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says it received a number of 911 calls Monday shortly before 1:30 p.m. When local officials arrived on the scene, they found one person dead as a result of the explosion. “All other employees were accounted for and no other injuries were reported," the sheriff's office said.

“It was also confirmed that the explosion occurred and limited to a concrete grain silo that is adjacent to a railroad spur on the grounds of the Co-Op,” the sheriff’s office said. “No hazardous chemicals were involved or released as a result of the explosion and it is not believed that a fire was involved.

“The cause of the explosion is not yet known and it was believed that the victim, who is a Co-Op employee, was working in the silo at the time of the explosion.”

Earlier this month, an explosion at a Louisiana chemical plant that makes fertilizer killed one person and injured seven others.
