Southern Storms Create Travel Chaos

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Icy weather has played havoc with air travelers Tuesday with cancellations and delays soaring as the day's early problems rippled through airline schedules.

The number of delayed flights in the United States approached 2,000 as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, four times the number of delays posted in the morning, according to FlightAware.com.

Those not pacing the airport corridors are facing cancellations. FlightAware.com reports more than 3,000 flight cancellations in the U.S. today, a number that's risen by more than 1,500 as of late morning.

The most affected airports are Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson, Houston's IAH and Chicago O'Hare. Houston has more than 50 percent of all flight cancelled.

Delta Air Lines is bearing the brunt of the cancellations, with 710 cancelled so far. Passengers not flying out of affected cities will still want to check with their carrier, especially if your aircraft is coming from an affected city.
