Muslim Passengers File Discrimination Suit Against Air Carrier

Photo Courtesy -- AirTran Airways(WASHINGTON) – Muslim passengers who say they were discriminated against at Ronald Reagan Airport in the Washington, D.C. area back in January 2009 have filed a civil suit against air carrier AirTran Airways.

In the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia, the plaintiffs, Kashif Irfan and his wife, Inayet Sahin, say they and seven others were discriminated against when they were removed from an AirTran flight to Orlando, Florida after passengers said they heard them making inappropriate remarks.

After being questioned, and cleared, by the FBI, the plaintiffs say AirTran refused to rebook them on a flight.

Although they would not comment on pending litigation, AirTran released a statement saying that the airline “denies liability and looks forward to vigorously defending ourselves in court. We are surprised to receive this complaint nearly two years after the incident occurred.”

The plaintiffs will seek a declaratory judgment, injunctive relief, and compensatory and punitive damages against the air carrier and its parent company, AirTran Holdings.
