Industry Opposition Halts BPA Curbs

Photo Courtesy -- Getty Images(WASHINGTON) – Chemical industry leaders have roadblocked a bipartisan effort to include legislation in the Senate’s pending food safety bill that would limit the use the controversial bisphenol (BPA) chemical, reports The New York Times.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said Wednesday that the American Chemistry Council (ACC) has urged Republicans against including language to regulate BPA in the bill.

Feinstein said she and Sen. Michael Enzi (R-Wyo.), the ranking Republican in charge of the food safety bill, had met to reach an agreement over how to address Democrats concerns over BPA in baby bottles and children's drinking cups. She said the two had reached an agreement that would set a six-month window for banning BPA from the products.

Despite the addition clearing a key procedural hurdle Wednesday, new objections arose after the ACC and some GOP senators said they could not support the six-month timetable.
