Murderer at Large After Breaking Out of Kansas Jail

Hemera/Thinkstock(MINNEAPOLIS, Kan.) -- A dragnet for two escaped convicts, a murderer and a kidnapper, escalated Thursday in Kansas.

Authorities are looking for Santos Carrera-Morales and Eric James, both 22. Police are cautioning the public not to approach the two men, who are considered armed and dangerous.

Carrera-Morales was convicted of two counts of first degree murder in 2008. James was convicted on three counts of aggravated burglary and one count of kidnapping, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Early Wednesday morning, four inmates in a holding cell at Ottawa County Jail in Minneapolis, Kan., complained to guards about a broken water line. The men were then able to overpower the guards using homemade knives, Ottawa County Sheriff Keith Coleman told The Salina Journal. The guards suffered minor injuries, he said.

One inmate was quickly apprehended. The second inmate, Drew Wade, turned himself in to authorities 240 miles away in North Platte, Neb., authorities said.

The inmates all had medium-security status and were being housed in the jail, which is located 120 miles west of Topeka, due to prison overcrowding.

Authorities After Three Convicts on the Run in Missouri

Photo Courtesy - Getty Images(PATTONSBURG, Mo.) -- Authorities are searching for three convicts, including a convicted murderer, who escaped from the Daviess/DeKalb County Regional Jail in Pattonsburg, Missouri.

It is unclear exactly how they escaped.  The Kansas City Star reports that the three men broke free by crawling under a section of the fence just before 8:00 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities consider these individuals dangerous, and believe the escapees may have gotten a ride out of the area.  All of the surrounding counties are assisting in the search, including local patrol, state troopers, highway patrol and SWAT.

The escapees -- Carlos Sarmiento, 57, Nicholas D. McCleary, 26, and Timothy J. Baudour, 34 -- do have family in the area, but it is unclear if they were involved in any way in the escapes.
