Wyoming Man Dies in Nevada Mine Shaft

Jupiterimages/Photos[dot]com(RENO, Nevada) -- A Wyoming man who plunged 190 feet into an abandoned Nevada mine is dead after rescuers called off efforts to save him on Friday.

Devin Westenskow, 28, of Evanston, Wyo., was exploring Wednesday northeast of Reno when he fell into the shaft.

After two unsuccessful rescue attempts, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management determined that the mine was too unstable and dangerous to continue.

Westenskow's family released a statement thanking workers.

"We feel they did everything possible to rescue Devin, but that there was no way to get him out alive given the extent of his injuries and instability of the mine shaft," the statement said. "We are forever grateful for their efforts."

Westenskow worked for a geothermal drilling operation in Nevada at the time of his death.
