United Flight Makes Emergency Landing after Smoke Reported

WGNO New Orleans(NEW ORLEANS) -- Smoke in the cockpit of a United Airlines flight forced pilots to make an emergency landing outside of New Orleans.

Flight 497 to San Francisco, which originated from New Orleans, had just taken off when the Airbus A-320 “experienced an issue with flight instruments,” the airline said, and was forced to make an unscheduled landing Monday morning.

“Following standard operating procedures, the crew returned to New Orleans,” the airline said in a statement. “The airplane landed safely and the customers exited via slides.”

The front wheels of the aircraft left the runway upon landing, ABC News New Orleans affiliate WGNO reported, and made a noticeable hole in the grass.

"My understanding is that the pilot did report...that he was having trouble controlling the aircraft," an airport spokesperson told WGNO.

United said there were no injuries reported. There were some complaints of smoke inhalation, according to WGNO.
