(CHICAGO) -- A federal judge ruled Tuesday that former Illinois Governor George Ryan must remain in jail, despite pleas from his defense attorneys that he be released early to spend time with his ailing wife. Lura Lynn Ryan is suffering from cancer and has been told she may have just a few months to live.
The Reverend Jesse Jackson was among those who publicly appealed for mercy in Ryan's case.
Ryan has served about three years of his 6 and a half year sentence for racketeering, mail fraud, tax violations, and making false statements to the FBI.
The Court also rejected the defense motions to set aside his conviction or reduce the sentence in light of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the "honest services" case.
