'The Star-Spangled Banner' Turns 197 Years Old

John Foxx/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The “Star-Spangled Banner” celebrates its 197th birthday on Wednesday.

Set to an old English tune, the U.S. national anthem was written in Baltimore on Sept. 14, 1814 as “Defense of Fort McHenry” by lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key.

The song became the country's anthem 116 years later when President Herbert Hoover signed an act on March 3, 1931, making it official.
