Illinois Governments to Get $26.5 Million in HUD Grants

Comstock Images/Thinkstock(CHICAGO) -- A grant from the federal government will lend local Illinois governments $26.5 million, according to an announcement this week from U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan.

The funding will "support community development and produce more affordable housing" for not only Chicagoans but residents in cities across the state, according to the official press release from HUD.

The grant money is meant for "community development, shelters, and to expand affordable housing programs," said Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin.

Nearly $9.4 million will go to Chicago’s Cook County.
