(LOS ANGELES) -- Former Secretary of State Warren M. Christopher died Friday night in Los Angeles at the age of 85.
Christopher served under President Bill Clinton for four years. He is also remembered for negotiating during the Iran hostage crisis under President Jimmy Carter, for which he won the Medal of Freedom in 1981.
The Scranton, North Dakota, native served in the Navy during World War II before graduating from the University of Southern California and later the Stanford Law School.
Christopher had been suffering from kidney and bladder cancer. He is survived by his wife and four children.
