(NEW YORK) -- A string of fires over the weekend in Manchester, New Hampshire has police looking for an arsonist. All eight fires broke out over a 16-hour period and police say they appear to have been set on purpose. Four of the fires in one neighborhood were set within a half-hour of each other.
Neighborhood resident Brian Caron says "The people are pretty nervous because they heard there's been other arsons...everybody's pretty shook up." While arson often happens in vacant buildings, district fire chief Mike Gamache says that is not the case here. "The areas these fires are being lit, people are actually living. People are sleeping in these buildings."
Detectives call the fires crimes of opportunity because whoever started them used couches, mattresses and whatever else was lying around. Thousands of dollars in damages have resulted and people are scared. Police and fire officials say they are thankful no one was hurt in the weekend blazes.
