(WASHINGTON) -- The husband of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords made a special appearance at the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. Thursday.
In his Navy captain's uniform, Mark Kelly made a rare trip away from his wife's hospital bedside and recited a prayer that was spoken over his wife hours after she was shot on Jan. 8.
"And behind you supporting you stands Raphael, God's angel of healing," Kelly prayed.
Kelly said Giffords' condition is what allowed him to be present at the event, and added that "it continues to improve." He said doctors are pleased with the upward slope of his wife's recovery.
