Quake-Impacted Nuke Plants Return to Normal Operations

The North Anna Nuclear Power Plant. Scott Olson/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- The North Anna nuclear plant in central Virginia has canceled its emergency declaration and is back up and running following Tuesday’s 5.8 magnitude earthquake, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission reports.

“In light of the quake’s strength and proximity to the plant, the NRC will soon decide whether to conduct a follow-up inspection, aimed at determining how the quake compares to what the plant was designed to withstand,” the Commission said Wednesday.

The dozen other plants that had declared “unusual events” after the earthquake also “had canceled their event designations by Tuesday night and all continue to operate normally.”
