(SMITH COUNTY, Texas) -- A Texas sheriff’s deputy is dead following a freak encounter with an injured cow.
Deputy Robert Britton of the Smith County Sheriff’s Department was directing traffic in Bullard last week, approximately 30 minutes south of Tyler, after a cow reported to have been hit by a car was lying in the middle of the road. The animal got up, charged Britton, and sent the 54-year-old deputy to the ground -- the man's head, clashing with the pavement.
Britton, a 19-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, died Monday from his injuries.
He is being remembered by friends as an “outstanding guy,” and someone who was “full of life.”
“He's going to be very, very missed. He was an asset and also a good friend," Patrol Sgt. Thomas Burnes said, according to ABC News affiliate KLTV.
Reports said the cow was euthanized.
Funeral services for Britton will be held Saturday.
