Texas Postal Worker Under Investigation for Stealing Mail

Joe Raedle/Getty Images(PEARLAND, Texas) -- A Texas Postal Service employee is under investigation for swiping bulk mail that belongs to other people and allegedly stowing it away in her office, home and storage spaces.

Karen Samford, 72, of Pearland, Texas, estimates that over the last 10 years she's absconded with enough catalogs, mailers and other junk mail to fill a box truck on an annual basis.

The jig was up when a supervisor noticed the stuff in her office and Samford admitted transporting the 3rd Class mail to other hiding places.

In her own defense, Samford says, "People can have mental issues.  It doesn't make them crazy; it doesn't make them insane.  It makes them stupid."

Now suspended without pay, Samford would prefer to keep her job, given that she's worked for the post office over the past 36 years.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service continues to monitor the situation as part of its mission to protect the Postal Service, its employees and its customers.
