Texas Manhunt Continues for Escaped Convict

Thinkstock/Getty Images(DALLAS) -- A manhunt continues in the metropolitan Dallas-Ft. Worth area for Alberto Morales, an escaped convict from Florida who stabbed a Miami-Dade detective who was transporting him to Nevada with a second law enforcement officer.

Sgt. Patricia Bimonte of the Miami-Dade Police Department told reporters at a press conference in Grapevine, Texas, Wednesday that Morales stabbed the detective with sharpened eyeglasses during a stop at a Walmart Monday night.

The injured detective was stabbed in the back and the neck.  He remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

The two detectives and Morales were originally traveling to Nevada from Miami on a commercial airline, but Morales became disruptive during the flight and airline officials refused to let him back on board after a stopover in Houston.  The detectives rented a car and were on their way to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to meet a third Florida police officer when Morales escaped.

Bimonte says Morales, 42, is a violent sex offender with a “horrible past” who should be considered extremely dangerous.  Bimonte says everything Morales has been arrested for -– from sexual battery to robbery -– has involved a deadly weapon.  He was being transported to Carson City, Nev., to serve time for a sexual battery conviction.

The U.S. Marshals Service is assisting local law enforcement agencies in the search for Morales.
