Woman Dead, 20+ Firefighters Injured in 5-Alarm Fire

Photo Courtesy - WABC-TV New York(NEW YORK) -- One person died and at least 20 New York City firefighters were injured late Saturday in a blaze that ripped through a six-story apartment building in Brooklyn that took hours to contain.

Most of the injuries came from smoke inhalation, while five firefighters were taken to Cornell Burn Center for treatment of minor injuries. Fire officials reported that the body of a 64-year-old woman was found on the 6th floor of the building, a likely victim of smoke inhalation. Three other civilians suffered minor injuries.

Over 200 firefighters were called to the five-alarm fire which broke out around 6:40 p.m. Saturday. It took hours to quell the fire as strong winds made the job even more difficult.

A fire department spokesman has said that a shelter for displaced residents was set up at a nearby school. The building houses around 70 apartments.
