Guatemalan Girl Visiting RI for Camp, Struck and Killed by Car

(SMITHFIELD, R.I.) -- A 12-year-old girl from Guatemala was struck and killed by a vehicle in Smithfield on Sunday.

The incident reportedly happened on Sunday afternoon on Route 44, according to published reports. Officials said the victim was walking with a group of other girls, when a car driven by an 80-year-old man from North Scituate jumped a curb and hit the girl. The victim was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Two other girls were also hospitalized with injuries sustained.

The girl was visiting Rhode Island to take part in a summer camp which starts Monday.
