Man Taken Into Custody Following Newport Standoff

(NEWPORT, R.I.) -- A 27-year-old man was taken into police custody Friday morning following a standoff with police in Newport, R.I.
Police were called to a home on West Evans Street during the early-morning hours, as a domestic disturbance led to a man barricading himself inside a home with his girlfriend's five children and refusing to come out, reports ABC's Providence affiliate WLNE-TV.
After a number of hours SWAT officers eventually stormed the home and took the man into custody. He was reportedly taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Officials said the children were unharmed.
