Stick-Wielding Store Owner Proves Too Much for Robbers

(NEW BEDFORD, Mass.) -- Don't bring a knife to a stick fight. That's probably the lesson learnt from a pair of suspects who attempted to rob a New Bedford convenience store.

The incident, captured on surveillance video, happened on Friday night at the St. Elias Mini Market on Rivet Street.

Police said two men entered the store armed with knives and tried to rob the store. However, the store's owner -- who had been robbed just a few days earlier -- was not in the mood, and took up a stick, which he began swinging at the suspects, resulting in one of the bandits fleeing the store.

Police said the other suspect remained at the scene and battled with the store owner, until workers from a nearby Mexican restaurant rushed in to help detain the suspect -- identified as Leland Blake Rosa -- until officers arrived.
