Wharton Home Receives Large Donation

(LENOX, Mass.) -- The fate of author Edith Wharton’s debt-ridden historic home is looking more optimistic. The National Historic Landmark has received a $300,000 donation from an anonymous donor.

The 1902 Lenox Mansion, more commonly referred to as The Mount, faces a $1 million principal payment. Officials at the landmark say they are grateful for the gift and will put it towards the payment, which is due in May.

Wharton, who designed and built the estate, lived there until 1911 while she finished her novel, The House of Mirth.
