(WASHINGTON) -- On Thursday, U.S. Senators Joe Lieberman and Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut, who are members of the Senate Armed Services Committee announced their support for the committee’s approval of the National Defense Authorization Act for 2012.
"This bill will provide our troops and their families the support they need, and I hope that the full Senate will take it up soon," Lieberman said. "Especially in this era of tightening budgets, the support this bill gives to Connecticut manufacturers shows just how important a role the state plays. I believe that Connecticut workers can not only feel more secure in their own jobs, but I expect that there will be new jobs in Connecticut’s defense industry in the future."
The bill authorizes a 1.6 percent pay rise for members of the military and the expansion of efforts to prevent military personnel from losing their homes.
In Connecticut the bill authorizes $8.6 billion in funding for the development of the Joint Strike Fighter program and acquisition of aircraft, powered by Pratt & Whitney engines.
"This budget is an historic blueprint for the future of our national defense and an overwhelming vote of confidence in the weapons systems made here in Connecticut, not only in the design and engineering, but also the workers who make possible our national defense," Blumenthal said. "These decisions were really made on the merits, and they are an endorsement of the quality of the work done in Connecticut on the Virginia class submarine and the Pratt & Whitney engines."
