Body Discovered Floating in West River
(NEW HAVEN, Conn.) -- A body was discovered floating in the West River behind the New Haven Regional Fire Training Academy on Ella Grasso Boulevard, ABC affiliate WTNH reports.
Luis Vega spotted the body when he went down to go fishing around 9:30 a.m. on Friday.
"Immediately my heart started racing and so I knocked on the door of the fire academy," he said. "And I told about ten or fifteen fire guys that I thought there was a dead body floating in the water. They went to look, they thought it was a dummy at first."
Firefighters determined it was the body of a person by using binoculars. Witnesses said the body appeared to be that of a man in his 50s or 60s and appeared to have been burned.
One police officer estimated that the body had been in the water for several days. The victim's name has not been released.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
