NY Ranks Third Nationally for Whooping Cough Cases

(NEW YORK) -- The Empire State ranks third nationally for the number of reported pertussis cases in 2012, according to a report released Thursday from the Centers for Disease Control.

There have been 1,006 cases of whooping cough reported in New York through May 26. New York City reported 173 cases, while the rest of the state reported 833 cases.

New York boasts some of the nation’s strictest immunization requirements to attend school and mandates a pertussis vaccination for students entering sixth grade.
