Bears Hall of Famer Snubs Obama’s White House Invitation

Comstock/Thinkstock(CHICAGO) -- Former Chicago Bears defensive tackle Dan Hampton will not be joining his teammates at the White House next week for a 25-year anniversary celebration of their Super Bowl championship, citing his dislike of President Obama.

“It’s my own personal choice,” the Hall of Famer told Chicago’s Mully and Hanley radio show Monday. “I don’t choose to go."

“I’m not a fan of the guy in the White House, and...hey, it was 25 years ago. Let it go.”

While Super Bowl champions are traditionally honored at the White House, the celebration for the 1985 Bears was cancelled when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded two days after their Super Bowl victory. President Obama, said to be an avid fan of the team, invited the Bears to finally come to the White House Oct. 7.

“It basically just rolled off our backs, and now, 25 years later to say, ‘Oh yeah, let’s put the band back together.’ No, I’m not in,” Hampton said.

In addition, Hampton, 54, cited the invitation’s not being extended to the players’ families.

“No family, no kids,” he said. “How do you go to the White House, and you tell your kids and your wife, ‘Oh, well I’m sorry. You’re not invited.’ It doesn’t matter for you.”
