(WASHINGTON) -- A memorial service was held in Minneapolis Saturday for Joan Mondale, the wife of former vice president Walter Mondale.
She died Monday at age 83 after an extended illness.
Vice President Biden and former President Jimmy Carter were among the dignitaries at the memorial service.
Biden said in his tribute, "The incredible thing about Joan Mondale was when anyone was in trouble, when anyone needed help, she was there."
He added, "Like all great treasures, her memory will be as powerful as her presence and those who loved her and those of her she loved so much."
Joan Mondale is survived by her husband and two sons.
