Congressman Declares Bid to Win Tom Coburn's Senate Seat

rabbit75_ist/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- At least one Republican is not wasting any time setting his sights on the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Oklahoma Republican Tom Coburn.

Congressman James Lankford announced Monday he will seek the GOP nomination for Coburn's seat in the primary to be held this June with the general election set for Nov. 4.

In a statement, Lankford said, "I am willing to wage a hard-fought campaign for the opportunity to continue Dr. Coburn’s conservative legacy."

However, the Senate Conservatives Fund has already come out against Lankford, based on his record in the House for his support "to increase the debt limit, raise taxes, and fund Obamacare."

Coburn announced last week that he was leaving the Senate at the end of this year due to a recurrence of prostate cancer.  He had initially intended to serve out his second and final term that was to conclude in 2016.
