Eric Cantor Concedes to Dave Brat in Stunning Primary

United States House of Representatives(RICHMOND, Va.) -- The chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, Pat Mullins, issued a statement thanking House Majority Leader Eric Cantor for his 14 years in office after Cantor was defeated in Tuesday's primary.

Cantor was defeated on Tuesday by Dave Brat, an economics and ethics professor at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. Brat was considered a longshot to defeat Cantor. Roll Call, the Capitol Hill newsletter, said that Cantor became the first House Majority Leader to lose a primary while holding that position.

On Tuesday night, Cantor acknowledged the "long faces" and "disappointment" in the crowd of supporters at his election night headquarters, saying "obviously we came up short." Still, Cantor said, "I believe in this country. I believe there is opportunity around the next corner for all."

Mullins thanked Cantor for his service to the state of Virginia. "During his legislative career, he has been a tireless advocate for the Commonwealth and his constituents," Mullins said.

Cantor did add that he would "continue to fight for all of you, for the conservative cause."
