Federal Appeals Court Denies Utah's Request for Same-Sex Marriage Stay

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(SALT LAKE CITY) -- A federal appeals court denied Utah's request to stop same-sex marriages, which have been allowed since Friday, when a federal judge overturned the state's ban on such unions.

The Salt Lake City Tribune reports that the decision came down from the 10th Circuit Court in Denver just before 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The court denied two requests for a stay, which would have stopped same-sex marriages from occurring during the appeal process.

The state filed an emergency stay request before noon on Monday, after a U.S. District Judge had denied a similar stay request.

The state plans to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, says the Tribune. Justice Sonia Sotomayor oversees the 10th Circuit and will consider the state's appeal.
