GOP Congressman with Gay Son Won't Back Same-Sex Marriage

Chris Maddaloni/CQ Roll Call(PHOENIX) -- Congressman Matt Salmon says he supports his gay son but not same-sex marriage.

The Arizona Republican made that statement to KTVK in Phoenix, acknowledging that "My son is by far one of the most important people in my life.  I love him more than I can say."

However, Salmon says that won't affect his opposition to gay and lesbian nuptials, asserting that the courts should not "change 2,000 years of social policy in favor of a redefinition of the family."

Salmon's position stands in contrast to Ohio Republican Sen. Rob Portman, who said his own son's admission that he was a homosexual got him to change his views on same-sex marriage.

In 2010, the Phoenix New Times reported Salmon’s son was in a relationship with a second cousin of Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake.

As it happens, Flake said last weekend that while he also opposes gays and lesbians getting married, he could endorse a GOP presidential candidate with views contrary to his own.
