Sen. Mitch McConnell Not Popular in His Own State

Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call(NEW ORK) -- Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell is ranked the least popular U.S. senator among his own constituents, according to a Public Policy Polling survey of 1,266 Kentucky residents.

McConnell, who is also Senate minority leader, only scored a 37 percent approval rating from the respondents, while 55 percent turned thumbs down on the lawmaker.

Not surprisingly, a majority of Republican voters like the job McConnell is doing, but both Democrats and independents overwhelmingly oppose the senator.

McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton scoffed at the results, saying, "This Democrat poll has a long-held reputation for skewed approval numbers and that’s obviously the case here since there is no poll, public or private, that has shown Senator McConnell’s approval ratings anywhere near where PPP suggests."

Last year, Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska earned the title of least popular U.S. senator.
