Snow Politics 2: Newark Mayor Cory Booker Tweets as He Plows

Photo Courtesy - Getty Images(NEWARK, N.J.) -- On Monday, we examined the perils of blizzards for politicians. New Jersey Lt. Governor and Republican Kim Guadagno went on vacation at the same time as her boss, Lt. Governor Chris Christie. The snowstorm hit and the Democratic leader of the State Senate was temporarily in charge.
Other mayors have felt the ire of voters after botching the response to the storm -- but not Cory Booker, the Newark Democrat. He’s taking plow requests via Twitter, and in some cases apparently getting out and digging around cars himself.

“Just dug a car out on Springfield Ave and broke the cardinal rule: "Lift with your Knees!!" I think I left part of my back back there,” wrote @corybooker on Monday night.

In other instances he’s gotten into the neighborhood of a stranded person and asked them to send a private direct message with their phone number so he could come help.

Booker has more than a million followers on Twitter, making him one of  the most followed politicians in the U.S. Newark has about a quarter the population of Booker's Twitter account.

Booker has pleaded for patience just like New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, although Bloomberg’s city response has been criticized.

At this point, Newark residents could expect the personal touch. Booker started accepting direct pleas via Twitter back in February, during the last big snowstorm to hit the East Coast.

It remains to be seen if Booker’s personal approach will lead to a city cleaned of snow quicker than New York. But it may lead to more goodwill regardless.
