(WASHINGTON) -- With businessman and possible GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump resurrecting the birther conspiracy theory, the president’s half-sister has weighed in, saying, “It’s unfortunate.”
“He was born in Hawaii,” President Obama’s half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, said in an interview with CNN. “There is a tremendous amount of proof that has already been presented. I think that it is time for people put that to bed, to rest completely.”
Soetoro-Ng’s comments come amid a renewed focus on the well-trod ground of the president’s birth certificate.
Trump, the real estate mogul and reality TV star flirting with the idea of a presidential run, has used conspiracy theories surrounding the birth certificate issue to gain publicity. Trump has fanned the flames by falsely claiming the president’s certificate of live birth doesn’t have a serial number or the signature of an official. It has both.
A Fox News poll this month showed 37 percent of Republican voters don’t believe the president was born in the United States.
