(CHICAGO) -- A Tea Party activist who was elected to Congress on promises of cutting spending so the nation can pay its bills allegedly owes his former wife $117,437 in child support.
Laura Walsh claims that Republican Congressman Joe Walsh of Illinois is behind on his payments in a court filing actually made last December. As of Thursday, the matter remains unsettled.
Joe Walsh was married to Laura Walsh for 17 years, producing three children, aged 23, 20 and 16.
According to the lawmaker, the charges published in a Chicago Sun-Times story amounted to a "hit piece." He added, "These latest attacks against me are false and I will fight them in the appropriate venue."
Meanwhile, an attorney for Laura Walsh responded, "Laura needs the money. She's been scraping by pretty much on her own for years, trying to collect from Joe. It's been very, very hard to raise three children on one income, as anyone who has done that knows. He hasn't been particularly helpful in that aspect since 2005."
The next court date to hear the progress of the settlement case is scheduled for Sept. 14.
