Sen. Chris Murphy: Biden’s Visit Will Help Newtown Heal

ABC News(NEWTOWN, Conn.) -- Vice President Joe Biden is slated to travel to Connecticut this week to deliver remarks at a conference on gun violence about 12 miles from Newtown, Conn.

Chris Murphy, Connecticut’s newly elected Democratic senator, told reporters on a conference call on Monday that Biden’s visit will help Newtown heal after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that sparked a national debate over gun control.

“We have not had a comprehensive forum to explain to the Newtown community and to the people in Connecticut the changes we’re thinking about making in Washington,” Murphy said, noting that most of the discussion about guns in Connecticut has centered on changes to state law.

“The conference is going to be really important, both in terms of its role in the community’s recovery process, as well as in the community’s role in the educational process in this issue,” Murphy told reporters on a conference call organized to release polling figures critical of the National Rifle Association.

Attendees have not been announced, and Murphy said the full list is being finalized. Murphy will host the event along with Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Rep. Elizabeth Etsy, both Democrats from Connecticut.

Senators’ Kids Steal the Show at Mock Swear-In

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- They have been sworn into the Senate Thursday, but for Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas), their kids were the ones who stole the show.

First was Gillibrand’s son, held atop his mother’s hip as she lightly touched the Bible during a mock swear-in with Vice President Joe Biden.

Midway through the oath, Gillibrand’s son reached out his hand and ruffled his mom’s hair.  With a big smile, Gillibrand proceeded with the oath as she tried to tamp down her hair.

Then came Murphy, who carried his son in one arm as he participated in the mock swear-in. (The real swearing-in occurs on the Senate floor; this particular one is a re-enactment for families, friends and photos.) As Murphy lifted his hand to take the oath, the toddler raised his hand as well, providing a perfect photo op for Murphy and his young son together being sworn in as a senator.

And as Catherine Cruz, the youngest daughter of the new Republican senator from Texas, started to cry, Biden quickly picked her up and joked about himself, “That’s a Democrat, I know but that’s O.K.”

Cruz’s wife Heidi quipped back, “She cries loudly for Republicans too.”

Chris Murphy Beats Ex-Wrestling Exec. Linda McMahon in Costly Conn. Race

Chris Murphy for Congress(NEW YORK) -- Democratic Rep. Chris Murphy beat out former wrestling executive Linda McMahon for a U.S. Senate seat from Connecticut in the costliest race in the state's history.

ABC News is projecting Murphy as the winner of the Senate race against McMahon, who outspent the congressman by more than $20 million, sinking some of her own fortune into her $42 million bid.

McMahon, who ran World Wrestling Entertainment before throwing her hat into the political ring, previously spent $50 million running for Senate in 2010.

Murphy spent about $20 million on the race. He has served as a congressman for Connecticut since 2006, and was tapped to run for Sen. Joe Lieberman's seat, who announced in 2011 that he would not run for re-election. Lieberman ran as an independent and caucused with Democrats.

The costly race turned bitter on both sides throughout the campaign, as McMahon shed light on a property owned by Murphy that faced foreclosure and Murphy showed that McMahon was late paying property taxes multiple times.
