(JACKSON, Miss.) -- Mississippi voters turned down a controversial measure Tuesday night that sought to make abortion illegal by determining life begins at conception.
The proposed addition to the state constitution would have defined a "person" as any human being "from the moment of fertilization," and effectively make abortion murder under the law. Opponents worried the measure would also make certain types of birth control illegal.
The electoral rebuke was a surprise to many observers, who expected the so-called "personhood" movement would achieve its first victory in Mississippi, after a defeat in Colorado.
