Clyburn’s ‘Raping’ Comment Is Inappropriate, Obama Campaign Says

United States Congress(WASHINGTON) -- The Obama campaign says a surrogate’s use of the word “raping” to describe Mitt Romney’s actions at his private equity firm, Bain Capital, is inappropriate.

“I want to say to you: I don’t take contributions from payday lenders. I refuse to do that,” Rep. Jim Clyburn said on MSNBC Tuesday morning. “That’s free enterprise. But there’s something about that enterprise that I have a problem with. And there’s something about raping companies and leaving them in debt and setting up Swiss bank accounts and corporate businesses in the Grand Caymans. I have a serious problem with that.”

Patrick Devlin, a spokesman for Clyburn, said that the top-ranking Democrat used the word “raping” as a “synonym for rob or plunder.”

Obama spokeswoman Lis Smith said in an email, “We strongly disagree with Congressman Clyburn’s choice of words- they have no place in this conversation.”

The private equity arena is the latest punching bag in the campaign. President Obama’s latest ads focus on companies that Romney bought while at Bain, and which later went bankrupt while Romney made money off of them for his investors.

Speaker Pelosi Endorses Clyburn for No. 3 Dem Leadership Post

Photo Courtesy - ABC News(WASHINGTON) -- Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi made it clear Friday night that she prefers Majority Leader Steny Hoyer continue as her No. 2 in the House Democratic leadership in the next session of Congress by endorsing Majority Whip James Clyburn for the No. 3 position -- not the No. 2 slot that Clyburn is currently seeking -- House Minority Whip.

If Pelosi gets her wish, it would maintain the current structure of the top Democratic leadership in the House -- Pelosi (Minority Leader), Hoyer (Minority Whip), and Clyburn (Democratic Caucus chair). But with Democrats losing a leadership position as they move into the minority in the 112th session of Congress, it's a game of musical chairs that will inevitably leave one leading House Democrat without a seat at the leadership table.

House Democrats will caucus Wednesday morning to elect their leadership for the 112th session of Congress.

House Republicans will also hold their elections later Wednesday afternoon, when they'll likely elect Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, Speaker of the House, Eric Cantor, R-Va., Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., Minority Whip, and Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, GOP Conference Chair.

Black Caucus Endorses Clyburn for Minority Whip

(WASHINGTON) – The Congressional Black Caucus announced Tuesday that they will endorse Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., for minority whip.

“He has been an extremely effective consensus-building member of the Democratic Leadership who has brought together all corners of our caucus behind a unified agenda,” said Rep. Barbara Lee, Chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

“As we transition into the minority, it is even more important that Congressman Clyburn continue in his role as Whip.”

The endorsement comes after Lee, D-Calif., announced her personal endorsement for Clyburn on Monday.
