Obama's Lead Speechwriter Leaving White House

Official White House Photo by Pete Souza(WASHINGTON) -- One of the young wordsmiths behind President Obama's speeches is leaving the White House.

Jon Favreau, 31, will cease to be the president's lead speechwriter come March 1, reports The Los Angeles Times.  He was barely 23 when he started writing speeches for Obama.

The newspaper says Favreau may seek a new job in Hollywood.

"Favreau plans to stay in Washington for a while, but he has often told friends that he wants to pursue screenwriting, as did former Obama speechwriter Jon Lovett, the co-creator of the new comedy 1600 Penn," the Times reports.

He will be replaced by Cody Keenan, the main writer behind the speech Obama delivered after the shooting in Tucson, Ariz., that left six people dead and 13 wounded, including former Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords,

Responding to the news of Favreau's departure, Obama told the Times in a statement that Favreau "has become a friend and a collaborator on virtually every major speech I've given in the Senate, on the campaign trail and in the White House."
