(WASHINGTON) -- The Senate’s number two Republican, Jon Kyl of Arizona, plans to announce Thursday that he will retire, a GOP source tells ABC News.
Kyl will join a growing group of lawmakers stepping aside. Last month, Texas Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison announced she would not seek re-election. On the Democratic side, a trio of senators -- Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Jim Webb of Virginia -- have recently said they will retire.
To date, Kyl had been coy about his re-election plans. As of last month, he had only $619,000 in campaign funds, a miniscule sum compared to the $16 million he raised the last time around.
