Romney to Alabama Singer: Do Skynyrd

David Becker/WireImage(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) -- Mitt Romney won the backing of Randy Owen, the lead singer of the band Alabama, during a stop at Thompson Tractor here in Birmingham. Minutes after Owen endorsed the former Massachusetts governor, Romney said he wished he could have heard him sing “Sweet Home Alabama.”

But the song is not by Owen’s band Alabama. Instead, it was originally sung by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Owen took to the stage and belted a few lines regardless.

During his endorsement, Owen admitted to the crowd that this was his first time endorsing a presidential candidate. He praised Romney’s leadership skills and 42-year marriage.

“I love to see a man with a beautiful woman, first of all, that he’s been married to for quite a while,” said Owen.

Romney has had a string of endorsements from popular musicians.  In the past, the Romney campaign has played Alabama’s song “I’m In A Hurry” at rallies.
