Michele Bachmann Reveals 'Devastating' Miscarriage

ABC News(ROCK HILL, S.C.) -- Michele Bachmann has revealed that she once suffered a "devastating" miscarriage, an experience that helped shaped her staunch opposition to abortion.

At a campaign event Wednesday night in Rock Hill, S.C., Bachmann, R-Minn., surprised the crowd with a deeply personal story about losing a baby.

“After our second child was born, we became pregnant with a third baby,” the Republican presidential candidate and the only woman in the field told the crowd, according to Politico.  “And it was an unexpected baby, but of course we were delighted to have this child. And the child was coming along, and we ended up losing that child. And it was devastating for both of us, as you can imagine if any of you have lost a child.”

Bachmann remained composed while she told the story and did not get chocked up, according to Politico, which attended the rally and first reported on her remarks.

“So we made a commitment that no matter how many children were brought into our life, we’d receive them because we’re committed to life,” she said. “And we didn’t know at that time we’d be foster parents, and that one day we’d be parents of 28 children, but we are extremely grateful for that opportunity because you can get money wrong, but you can’t get life wrong. And I am committed to life.”

“This is an easy one,” she said. “I am 100 percent pro-life, from conception until natural death.”

Though Bachmann was once a Democrat, who volunteered on Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign, the miscarriage alone did not lead her to become pro-abortion. A fundamentalist Christian since girlhood, her campaign said “Michele has always been pro-life."

Bachmann is staunchly opposed to abortion. She recently signed the Susan B. Anthony Pledge, in which candidates promise to appoint anti-abortion judges and cabinet members if elected. She has also called for an end to public funding for Planned Parenthood.
