The president will unveil his national wireless initiative from Marquette, a city where local businesses have been able to grow as a result of broadband access, as well as exporting goods to new markets around the world, according to the White House.

The White House says the new wireless initiative will extend high-speed wireless to 98 percent of the population within five years, provide a nationwide inter-operable wireless broadband network for public safety, and lower the deficit over the next 10 years by $9.6 billion.

They say all these goals will translate into jobs and a stronger economy.

As part of Thursday's announcement, the initiative will propose developing and building the next generation of wireless networks through the creation of an innovation fund, driven by private sector investments, that will be created to bring in $3 billion in one-time proceeds to spur innovation.

The Wireless Innovation (WIN) Fund will support basic research, experimentation and testbeds, and applied development in a number of areas, including public safety, education, energy, health, transportation, and economic development, the White House said.
