Romney Cancels Campaign Appearance Due to Plane Crash at Event Site

J.D. Pooley/Getty Images(BURLINGTON, Mass.) -- Mitt Romney’s single campaign event of the weekend was cancelled Sunday due to an investigation into a plane crash at the Colorado airport where the candidate’s plane was set to land.

“Due to a plane crash involving a small aircraft at the Pueblo airport that is under investigation we are no longer going to Pueblo. We do not want to interfere with the investigation or any emergency response efforts,” said campaign spokesman Rick Gorka, just hours before the Romney charter was set to take off for Colorado from Massachusetts.

Romney’s campaign rally was scheduled to be held at the Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum, which is adjacent to the Pueblo Memorial Airport.

According to ABC News’ Colorado Springs affiliate KRDO-TV, two runways were shut down at the airport following a crash involving an experimental airplane at around 9 a.m. Sunday.

The Pueblo Police Department told KRDO that there was one person on the plane when it crashed, and that the person was killed in the crash.

Romney has spent the weekend at his Belmont, Mass., home, taking a day off the trail on Saturday to watch one of his grandsons play soccer. In the evening, he went out to an Italian restaurant with his wife, Ann, and their son Tagg and Tagg’s wife Jen.

Romney spent several hours Sunday doing debate prep at a hotel.

Romney is scheduled to fly to Los Angeles Sunday night to be in place for a speech there on Monday to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
