Progressive Group Plans Protest at Obama Campaign Headquarters

Duncan Smith/Thinkstock(CHICAGO) -- A group of liberal Democrats who fundraised and volunteered for Barack Obama in 2008 plans to protest Friday outside his re-election campaign headquarters in Chicago.

Organizers with the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, a liberal PAC, say they will attempt to deliver 200,000 signatures on a pledge to withhold support from the president if he consents to budget cuts to federal entitlement programs.

“We’re hoping Jeremy Bird or Jim Messina will come down to accept it,” said PCCC spokesman Neil Sroka, a former Obama campaign staffer hired by Bird in 2008.  Bird is the national field director for the campaign, and Messina is the campaign manager.

“What I learned on that campaign is that there’s nothing more important to the Obama campaign than its volunteers,” Sroka said. “They’re the heart and soul of it. “

Signatories to the pledge, who claim to have donated more than $17 million and 2.6 million volunteer hours in 2008, are threatening to close their wallets and stay home in 2012 if Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid benefits are changed in a deficit reduction deal with Republicans.

Sroka said a small group of activists will approach the campaign’s headquarters near Millennium Park with posters and signs, but said it wouldn’t be a “huge rally.” They plan to enter the building lobby and demand access to campaign officials, he added.

President Obama in 2008 encouraged his grassroots supporters to “hold me and other elected officials more accountable for their actions."

Sroka said he hopes Obama’s top campaign managers will at the very least acknowledge their plea. “We would like a commitment from them to taking the message directly to Obama,” he said.

The campaign announced Wednesday that a record 552,000 supporters donated to Obama’s reelection campaign in the second quarter.  The number of 2008 supporters now threatening to withhold support would be one-third of that total.

Liberal Group Tells Obama Not to 'Cave' on Tax Cuts, Using Words of Obama

Photo Courtesy - The White House(WASHINGTON) -- The Progressive Change Campaign Committee announced this week that it would run a TV ad urging President Obama not to “cave” on his promise to let the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans expire. The ad, to run on cable in Washington D.C. and in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, uses the words of then-candidate Obama saying he would “allow the temporary Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans to expire,” a pledge he made on May 29, 2007 in Iowa City.

The ad then uses the September words of House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, when the incoming Speaker told CBS “if the only option I have is to vote for some of those tax reductions going, I'll vote for them...If the only option I have is to vote for those at $250,000 and below, of course I'm going to do that.”

Urges the PCCC: “If President Obama dares Republicans to oppose him, he will win….Tell President Obama:  Keep Your Promise. Fight, Don’t Cave, On Tax Cuts.”

PCCC’s director, Adam Green, called “spectacular,” the $50,000 his group raised from 3,000 people to run the ad thus far.

It should be noted, of course, that House Democrats are doing exactly what PCCC wants Senate Democrats to do: only offer a vote on extending the Bush tax cuts for the middle class, and letting those for taxpayers who make over $200,000 a year/$250,000 for a family to expire, and Boehner on Thursday called the move “chicken crap.”

"The election was one month ago,” Boehner said. “We're 23 months from the next election and the games have already started to set up the next election."
