(WASHINGTON) -- Republicans have taken over control of 19 legislative bodies from the Democrats after Tuesdays Election, according to the Republican Sate Leadership Committee.
The National Conference of State Legislatures confirmed that Republicans now control 55 legislative bodies compared to 40 under Democratic control. The Oregon House is evenly divided between both parties.
At the beginning of this week, Democrats controlled 60 of the country's state legislative chambers, Republicans 36.
Republicans are on track to add more than 500 seats in state legislatures, a figure that comes close to their 1928 high, according to the NCSL.
The changes give Republicans a strong upper hand in the redistricting process that starts early next year.
