(WASHINGTON) -- More than a million Americans who have been unemployed for six months will see their paychecks from the government come to a halt this weekend.
With Congress home for the holidays, benefits for the long-term unemployed are set to expire on Saturday.
In a conference call this week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi accused Republicans of not caring about the impact on families.
The GOP may well back a retroactive extension of employment benefits when Congress returns next month, but Republicans demand offsets -- cuts elsewhere in the budget.
