US Postpones Meeting with Russian Officials over Syria Crisis

Alex Wong/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- In a sign of just how split Russia and the U.S. are over last week's chemical weapons attack, the State Department announced that it has postponed planned meetings this week between Under Secretary Wendy Sherman and Ambassador Robert Ford with their Russian counterparts in the Hague.

A senior State Department official announced Monday that the meetings are being postponed due to "ongoing consultations about the appropriate response to the chemical weapons attack in Syria on August 21."

"As we’ve long made clear – and as the events of August 21 reinforce – it is imperative that we reach a comprehensive and durable political solution to the crisis in Syria," read the statement released Monday. "The United States remains fully invested in that process.  We will continue working with Russia and other international partners to move towards a transition based on the framework laid out in the Geneva Communique.”

While the official says the meeting will be rescheduled, an indication of when it will happen was not given.
