12 Arrested in Calif. and Nevada for Illegal Wildlife Sales
(LOS ANGELES) -- By posing as potential buyers, state and federal agents have uncovered illegal online sales of endangered and protected species from sellers in Nevada and California.
According to ABC News affiliate KABC, the California Department of Fish and Game and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted "Operation Cyberwild" on online websites including eBay and Craigslist, which netted a dozen people in California and Nevada. The suspects allegedly sold several items including leopard skin coats, a live piranha, an elephant's foot, and a Hawksbill sea turtle shell.
If convicted, the sellers could face fines of up to $100,000 and six months to a year in prison.
