Study: Minorities Affected Most by Decline in Housing Market

(WASHINGTON) -- A new study has found that white households have a median wealth 20 times that of blacks and 18 times that of Hispanics, creating the widest racial wealth gap since the government made such data available.

The Pew Research Center study found that a decline of the housing market and subsequent loss of homeowner equity was the main factor in the discrepancies between race, with Hispanics among those affected the most. Hispanics homeowners saw their median level of home equity drop from $99,983 in 2005 to $49,145 in 2009, while blacks saw their median wealth drop close to $20,000.

According to the analysis, there is also a strong correlation between the data and geography. The study found that Hispanics were hit especially hard over the last four years as a result of the sharp decline in the housing market in areas where a majority of Latinos live: Arizona, California, Florida, and Nevada.
